Porcelain Tile

Porcelain tiles have become extremely popular in recent years in part because of their durability and many uses. Porcelain tile is similar in appearance to ceramic tile in fact sometimes it is difficult to distinguish between the two. The main difference in porcelain tile is that it is made from a porcelain body instead of a clay body.

Porcelain can be fired at a hotter temperature when making the tile and therefore it is more dense with very low water absorption and higher breaking strength than most ceramics. Porcelain can be used in exterior applications even when below freezing.

Most Porcelain tiles have a glazing finish which creates the color and design of the tile with a porcelain body. “Through Body” porcelains have the color running all the way through the tile and are usually unglazed. All porcelains are not made alike, so it is advisable to compare the characteristics between tiles.

In choosing a porcelain tile, it is best to look at the different properties of each tile to make sure it is suitable for situation. Characteristics to compare are:

  • the breaking strength of the tile
  • the glaze hardness
  • water absorption
